Data backup is the most important thing you can do to your computer. All your documents, pictures, videos, and memories are stored on the hard drive and when that fails, it’s all gone. Frankly, it is extremely hard and time consuming to recover data and forensics recovery can run in the thousands of dollars. If your computer does fail, it is important to unplug it and have it looked at before data is overwritten. Data recovery starts at $100.

Some free data backup methods:

Microsoft Live Skydrive – link
Microsoft offers 5GB of FREE space for data storage on their billion dollar server network. It now offers Office 2010 integration so that you can save directly to live drive so you can access your documents everywhere with internet access, so you can worry less about losing your thumbdrive!

Mozy - link
One of the easiest to use online backup programs. You pick which folders you want to use and your data is automatically backed up securely to their servers. Even if your computer burns down, you can retrieve them over the internet later.

Acebackup automatic schedule file backup – link

DriveImage XML – link

Whether you need wired or wireless networking, we have your back. Wired Ethernet is the most reliable with speeds at 1000Mbps as the standard. Wireless ranges from around 11mbps to 100mbps with actual speeds about 50mbps.

Wireless networks come in many standards. From A,B,G, to N. And in between those letter, manufacturers like to make up their own brands such as Speedbooster, Ultrarange, Super G, Xtreme G, Dual Band, Pre-N, ect. Frankly any wireless router is fast enough for internet surfing. The slowest 802.11b starts at 11Mbps, which is still twice as fast as road runners 5mbps top speed. Range depends on an incredible amount of variables from distance, type of walls, position you are sitting, phones, microwaves, to time of day. G is the one size fits all standard. It will work with all other versions, B,G, and N. Generally routers with 2 external antennas will provide better range and penetration than internal antennae, though your milieage may vary. There is really no perfered brand due to the fact that only two companies make the wireless chips and everyone else like Netgear, Linksys, Dlink, Belkin, SMC put boxes around them. Whatever is on sale is just fine. Sadly, there is little difference between a $15 router and a $150 one. Just make sure it is secure or your neighbors will steal your internet whether intentional or not.

Not sure whether to use WEP 64bit, WEB 128bit, WPA, WAP2, AES, TKIP, PSK, Enterprise, EPA? Contact me.

Viruses, Spyware, Malware, Trojans, Adware, Rootkits. There are many names and categories, but they all do things to your computer that you don’t want. It is estimated that everyone is infected with 5.5 malware on their computer. There isn’t a universal way to stop them, but some common sense and awareness can really help. Don’t open up random attachments. Don’t download software you did not specifically request. Don’t share files.

Antivirus and Antimalware programs can help, but they cannot catch absolutely all that is out there. Some may even run more than one program to catch all the malicious software out there. I have personally run many tests all the different antisvirus programs. Surpassingly I’ve found that the free ones are just as good, if not better as the commercial ones. I advise you to run at least one of the recommended antivirus programs I recommend. Spybot and Adaware are no longer enough. As always Backup, backup, backup, as many viruses cannot be removed without windows being left in shambles.

Beware of fake websites that pretend to be antivirus.

Spoof antispyware sites. A new threat are rogue antivirus sites. These pop up with fake virus detection warnings. They then offer to remove them for a fee. These are getting extreme prevalent and extremely hard to detect if they are malicious or not. Not only do they cause headaches, they attempt to steal your money by bribing for your credit card in order to get rid of it. If you notice any pop-ups showing a scan for viruses, press Esc a couple times and close the web browser (alt-F4). Your regular antivirus program may not pick up on this, so always keep an eye out!

Recommended products:

Avira Antivir Personnal – link
This is the most lightweight and tough antivirus program available currently. It uses very little system resources and catches a good deal of virus and even malware. If you have Norton, Symantec, McAfee, I recommend you uninstall them and install this instead.

Asquare antimalware – link
Asquared makes a very tough antimalware program that has antispyware, antimalware, and firewall all in one. It is good at catching things antivirus may miss.

Antimalware Toolkit -link
this rescue kit automatically downloads popular free antimalware apps to your computer. This pretty much rounds out the protection on top of the first two applications. It includes Spyware blaster, CCleaner, RogueRemover, SUPERantispyware, Spybot, Hijack this, and other gems.
